In The Classroom

First grade is an exciting year!

We will start every day with a morning meeting where we go over the daily schedule and morning message. This time is to build classroom community and develop classroom routines. 

Throughout the year we will develop our literacy skills and strategies through a workshop model. Both reader's and writer's workshop foster a child centered approach to teaching literacy that brings the "real" world of reading and writing into the classroom. In reader's workshop, students select their own reading materials, read at their own pace and talk to other about what they have read. In writer's workshop, students will learn to write, revise, edit and publish stories throughout the year. They will also begin to assess their writing and learn to implement the characteristics of quality writing into their own work. Most of our writing will be kept at school and will be sent home at the end of the year. It is a huge year for literacy and I can't wait to see all of the hard work and growth of the first grade readers and writers!

This year in math,  developing number sense is crucial. It provides the foundation for learning new math concepts. We will not only be working on "how" to solve problems,  but also understanding "why" these equations work. I will be encouraging students to practice and use multiple strategies for solving problems. I am very excited to work with the mathematicians of room 112!

Week 18

Here are some highlights from the week... In science, the geologists were introduced to Sedimentary Rocks. We spent time experimenting and testing our sedimentary rocks by putting them in water and using sandpaper to help us understand how they are formed. They also were given a cup of river rocks and different sized screens to sort the rocks by size. They identified pebbles, gravel and sand and after sorting them glued them into their rock journal! Nurse Mitchell from the office came into Room 112 to do a hand washing lesson and demonstration. The kiddos reviewed "when" and "why" we wash our hands and then they got to practice "how" with some glow in the dark goo! Finally, in honor of Martin Luther King Day, w e read a poem that will hopefully continue to spread the message of Martin Luther King Jr. I have also included a picture of it so you can read it together on here! Here are some highlights from the week... We wrapped up our non-fiction reading & writing units this week. As a culmination check-in, the first graders had an hour to plan, write and revise an informational piece of writing - and wow, was I amazed! They were so focused, some of their pencils never even left the page! Their passion, knowledge and research on their topics has been incredible to see! They are becoming such strong writers, readers and teachers! In math this week, we began to use our understanding of place value to compare and change numbers. The first graders built and wrote numbers and saw how they changed when you add 10 and take away 10. Our goal in first grade is to mentally be able to add and take away 10 from any number. We have been working on adding two digit numbers. We use "quick ten" drawings to make this concept concrete and visual. Here are some highlights from the week... Our research and writing has been going strong! The first graders are developing their note taking skills and creating incredible non-fiction books. W e have been focusing on the importance of an introduction and conclusion in our non-fiction books. We discussed different ways that we can introduce our topic, and chapters, to hook our reader and draw them in. This will be a strategy we continue to build on as we develop our writing! I encourage you to ask your first grader about the topic they are studying and you can even participate in some shared research :) In math, we are continuing to build our number sense and beginning our new unit on place value. The mathematicians are building on their understanding of the way numbers can be broken into parts.
