Week 25

Here are some highlights from the week...

We wrapped up our non-fiction reading & writing units this week. As a culmination check-in, the first graders had an hour to plan, write and revise an informational piece of writing - and wow, was I amazed! They were so focused, some of their pencils never even left the page! Their passion, knowledge and research on their topics has been incredible to see! They are becoming such strong writers, readers and teachers!

In math this week, we began to use our understanding of place value to compare and change numbers. The first graders built and wrote numbers and saw how they changed when you add 10 and take away 10. Our goal in first grade is to mentally be able to add and take away 10 from any number. We have been working on adding two digit numbers. We use "quick ten" drawings to make this concept concrete and visual. If you are practicing adding 2 digit numbers at home, I encourage you to ask your first grader to "prove it!"

We ended the week with a special visitor - the curator of the Rice Rock Museum! She shared different fossils and minerals with the first graders. The students had a chance to look at, touch and even bring home rocks and minerals of their own! The curator was very impressed with the first grade geologists :)

Word Builder:
This time-based word-building game is the perfect way to boost your child's vocabulary and reading skills. Mix and match letters to see how many words they can come up with! Each round of this word builder is different to keep the game fresh for hours of learning and play.

What You Need:
Notebook,Pencil, Timer

What You Do:
1. To start the game, write four random consonants and three random vowels on a page in the notebook and pass it to your child.
2. Set the timer for 30 seconds, then have them write down as many two-letter words as they can think of in 30 seconds.
3. Once the time is up, go over the words and discuss which ones were spelled right.
4. For the next round, write down four new random consonants and three random vowels on a new sheet of paper.
5. Pass the notebook to your child, set the timer for 30 seconds, and this time, ask them to write down as many three-letter words as they can think of.
6. Once the time is up, review the words with and discuss which ones were spelled right again.

7. You can play as many rounds as you like, upping the word length by one letter each turn. If your child feels comfortable, keep challenging them and you just might both be surprised at how many words they can come up with!]
