Week 24
Here are some highlights from the week...
Our research and writing has been going strong! The first graders are developing their note taking skills and creating incredible non-fiction books. We have been focusing on the importance of an introduction and conclusion in our non-fiction books. We discussed different ways that we can introduce our topic, and chapters, to hook our reader and draw them in. This will be a strategy we continue to build on as we develop our writing! I encourage you to ask your first grader about the topic they are studying and you can even participate in some shared research :)
In math, we are continuing to build our number sense and beginning our new unit on place value. The mathematicians are building on their understanding of the way numbers can be broken into parts. Here is an activity you can do at home to help support your kiddo's number sense:

In math, we are continuing to build our number sense and beginning our new unit on place value. The mathematicians are building on their understanding of the way numbers can be broken into parts. Here is an activity you can do at home to help support your kiddo's number sense:
- Guess My Number (use a hundreds chart or a number line) –To play, ask one player to choose a number within a set and comfortable (based on age) range such as 1-100. This number remains secret until someone guesses it. To start, have one participant at a time take turns narrowing the range until one is able to guess the number. Questions might include: Is it greater than fifty? Is it an even number? Is it less than eighty? Is it more than twenty? The range of numbers should narrow each time until someone guesses the actual number.
Oh, the places the first graders will go! They have been learning and growing and getting ready for second grade. To commemorate the growth and the places that learning will continue to take them, we did a hot air balloon directed drawing! Soon, they will be on display in the hallway, just in time for Dr.Seuss' birthday :)
We ended the week with a special visit from our Yoga teachers - Ms, Lynea, Mr. Jim and we even got to meet Mandy B and Junebug from the videos! They have been teaching us all about our brain and nervous system and helping us learn ways to move our bodies and train our brains!
