Week 7
Here are some highlights from the week...
We started the week with Run for the Arts - and wow, we have some speedy first graders! Just like the first graders having been practicing their reading and writing stamina, they got a chance to show off their running stamina as well! Thanks to all of the volunteers that spent the morning at Stephenson cheering on the runners and punching their cards for each lap they ran.
In math, we have been building our fluency and number sense by using number bonds. Number bonds are a tool that help us understand the relationship between numbers and how they break apart. Through number bonds, students start making connections between addition and subtraction as well. We also spent a lot of time this week discussing and proving that numbers are even or odd. I encourage you to practice number bonds at home - you can ask your first grader to show all the ways to make 9 using number bonds. Here are some examples:

In readers workshop, we practiced retelling our stories using the 5 finger retell. This is a great tool to use at home when you are reading with or to your first grader. This is a great way to build and foster a strong understanding and comprehension of what they are reading. Here is a picture:

Reminders:
October 14-18: Missoula Week
October 17: The Great Oregon Shake Earthquake Drill— 10:18am
October 18: Missoula Performances, 12:45pm and 7:00pm
October 21: RFTA Collection of Funds DUE
