Week 6

Here are some highlights from the week...

In Reader's Workshop, we reviewed picking books that are a "good fit" for us! They are not too hard, not too easy, but just right! This can be a challenging task, but the first graders did an excellent job identifying when a book might be too hard or too easy.  We will continue to practice and reinforce picking and reading "good fit" books throughout the year.

*** Our current focus when picking books that are just right.

0 - 1 tricky words on a page = too easy

2 - 3 tricky words on a page = GOOD FIT!
4 - 5 tricky words on a page = give it a try
5 or more tricky words on a page =  goal book

In writing, students have been doing a great job sharing their small moments and stretching their small moments across pages.  They are making their stories come to life by including dialogue, movement, thoughts and feelings to make their writing even stronger. We have been focusing on being a supportive writing partner by listening, giving specific compliments and asking questions. It is awesome to see the eager and excited authors of Room 112!

We began our health unit this week with a focus on kindness. The unit starts by reflecting on where kindness starts...with YOU! You have to be kind and take care of yourself, before you can be kind and take care of others. We then discussed our "circle of concern" the people we interact and care about, then we talked about other groups of people beyond that circle. Through stories and discussions we recognized examples of how reaching out with kindness can make our schools, communities, and world a better place. I encourage you to continue these conversations at home - here are some ideas for how your first grader can spread kindness!
