Week 2
Here are some highlights from our short, but busy week!
We have continued to practice Independent Reading and have been building on Reader's Workshop expectations: Read quietly, read the whole time, start right away, and build stamina. We will continue to build and develop these skills as we practice this independent learning and work time. I am already seeing their stamina grow!
In Writer's Workshop we are also developing our routine and goals - which happen to be the same as Reader's Workshop, but for writing! After the weekend, we always write our Weekend News. One way you can support this at home, is spending some time on Sunday reflecting on the weekend and having your first grader think about what they want to write about in their weekend news. This supports the brainstorming process and also eliminates the "I don't know what I did" conversation on Monday morning :)
We have been developing strong math mindsets through videos, discussions and exploration. They are already beginning to use mathematical language "I know this because..." "I agree with ____ because..." "I disagree because..." Being able to talk about mathematical thinking and being able to show it are concepts we will continue to build on a daily basis.
The week ended with our Lion art project to show our Stephenson pride! The first grade artists got to use sharpies and oil pastels to create some lions that are really something to roar about - pun intended :)

Fun! I still have Ingrid's Lion. I look forward to seeing these. :)
